Equestrian statue of El Cid

APA Glyn Genin

Follow the banks of the normally placid River Arlanzón, passing the decorative, crenellated Arco de Santa María, once the main entrance to the city. At the end of the Paseo, El Cid greets you, in the form of an impressive equestrian statue. Nearby is the intricate and strange facade of the Casa del Cordón where, on 23 April 1497, Fernando and Isabel welcomed Columbus back from his second voyage to the New World. Back across the river, two noble Renaissance houses serve as the Burgos Museum.

On the western outskirts of Burgos, the Convento de las Huelgas was founded in the 12th century by Alfonso III. Behind fortress-like walls, the complex is something of an architectural hybrid, with Romanesque elements and an exquisite Mudéjar-Gothic cloister. Kings were crowned and buried here, and a small museum displays some of the ecclesiastical treasures and artworks amassed by the convent's powerful abbesses.
